In May 2023, the inaugural China-Central Asia Summit was grandly convened in Xi'an. The heads of state of the six participating nations jointly planted pomegranate trees, sowing the seeds of solidarity, mutual trust, and shared prosperity. At the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev witnessed the signing of the agreement between NPU and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University to co-establish the NPU Kazakhstan Branch, officially launching a new era of high-level engineering education.
Moving with remarkable institutional efficiency, the joint project teams executed the strategic layout with maximum velocity. Within a mere 5-month window, the branch successfully finalized campus infrastructure upgrades, assembled an international faculty panel, and deployed the full-English engineering Master’s curricula. On October 12, 2023, the NPU Kazakhstan Branch was formally inaugurated in Almaty, marking the establishment of China's first high-level engineering branch campus in Central Asia.
Transcending the limitations of traditional, single-dimensional campus models, this Eurasian academic platform aligns precisely with Kazakhstan’s strategic imperatives in the digital economy, green energy, and aerospace monitoring.
Leveraging NPU’s elite heritage across its cornerstone disciplines – Materials Science, Computer Science, Telecommunications, and Artificial Intelligence – the branch cultivates premium engineering talents for Kazakhstan.

Inception: The branch rolled out dual-degree Master’s programs to consolidate the foundation of cross-border engineering talent.
2025 Expansion: Aligned with Kazakhstan’s National AI Development Strategy, the branch launched an elite dual-degree Bachelor’s program in Artificial Intelligence. Signed during the inaugural China-Central Asia Education Ministers' Meeting, this flagship program leverages NPU’s top-tier computer science curriculum, adopts an international 2+2 dual-degree model, and integrates advanced aerospace intelligent remote sensing research.
Continuous Pipeline: In the same year, the branch added dual-degree PhD programs in Materials Science and Computer Science, successfully constructing a comprehensive “Bachelor’s – Master’s – PhD” continuous dual-degree training framework.
Concurrently, the branch deployed a triad of physical research platforms: the “Belt and Road” Joint Laboratories, Micro-Satellite Joint R&D Hubs, and Industrial Technology Transfer Pipelines, allowing talent cultivation and scientific research to mutually reinforce one another as this academic pearl thrives in Central Asian soil.
On May 18, 2023, the leadership of both universities signed a Priority International Partnership agreement along with other cooperation agreements.

The first graduating classes have delivered an outstanding testament to this educational ecosystem, securing elite placements across advanced research, public service, domestic academia, and flagship enterprises.
Advanced Research: Kadyrma Dilnaz, Dosmukhambetova Anar, and Bolysbek Murat successfully transitioned into advanced doctoral tracks in materials science and computer engineering, deep-diving into green energy infrastructures and large-scale AI architectures.
Public Service: Baigaliyeva Aiym cleared exceptionally rigorous national selection criteria to join the Financial Monitoring Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan (AFM) as an industry expert, utilizing advanced digital analytics to drive the intelligent upgrade of national financial supervision.
Foundational Education: Issayeva Gaukhar returned to her home region to join the faculty of Taraz Humanitarian College, promoting and popularizing advanced information technology among local youths.
